Fucked Up Friends is an almost exact replica of the now trademarked BMSR sound. All the hallmarks are there; the walls of squelchy synths, the oscillating melodies, the vocoder-ed vocals and the overall woozy and intoxicating bear hug of sound that envelops you from the start. adrian of bristol & co au fost aces of spades cu toate ca: sala palatului=sala poporului, targul creepy al mesterilor populari la intrare, lumina stinsa 89ish la insistentele sefului (de sala) si ale malacilor cheliosi in mijlocul unui pogo cinstit, tricky era putin anchilozat de amorteala verde ce-l invaluia&mormaia ursulin (he put the trip in trip-hop, right?), francesca vocala era imbracata club a casual, cele 3 reflectoare care au proiectat/vor proiecta aceleasi fascicule de lumina si la concertul de colinde de acum 15 ani/anul acesta, splifful imens intens asteptat n-a aparut. cu toate astea, performance-ul in sine a fost inchegat profi astfel incat sa-ti vina si sentimentul ca asisti la ceva emotional numit muzica. trip-hop hibrid sau tricky-hop cu exacerbari rock, nu poti sa zici nu la ce auzi pentru ca, in final, suna bine si domnul se contorsiona dar si-mi canta asa cum stia el a canta. In the early part of the decade, Oakland, California-based label/collective Anticon saw between the cracks of popular music to offer what was, at the time, a genuine alternative to the dominant sounds of the era. Running counter to such trends as indie-rock's resuscitated garage-rock traditionalism, hip-hop's ever expanding accessibility and electronic music's new found commercial viability, the Anticon crew sat on the fringes of all three genres, occasionally tagged "ambient hip-hop" or "avanthop" in an appropriately vague attempt to define their thrillingly idiosyncratic sound. The new record, Resurgam, puts an end the two year silence, and as the Latin sound and sense of title connotes, this is something more than a new album, a simple reappearance; a resurrection, the revivified work of Brendon Whitney is this new Alias. | 2008, Pias. Back round about Asian Dub Foundation's heyday in the late 90s, it became something of a cliché to hail them as the closest the United Kingdom had to a modern-day, multicultural Clash or Sex Pistols, carrying the torch of punk rebellion. In ways this felt a little bit lazy - the idea any music that wore its political beliefs on its sleeve necessarily harked back to 1977 (and all that) felt like conservative thinking in itself: an attempt to bracket a band who set out to smash brackets wherever they found them. It's a little disappointing to report, then, that a decade on from their incendiary breakout album, 1998's Rafi's Revenge, ADF return with an album titled Punkara - a conflation of 'punk' and 'Bhangra' - that sounds like a genre cooked up by a music journalist in his lunch break. Described by the band as ''a move away from club-oriented sounds'' in favour of a heavier, ska-punk/rap-rock sound, Punkara initially disappoints: frankly it's a bit Limp Bizkit, albeit with faster beats, and prone to lyrics that shun righteous polemic for the sort of clever-clever wordplay much beloved of nu-metal bands. Still, while the overall shape of Punkara is something less than revolutionary, there's some incendiary fun to be had within. Not their best record, but that Asian Dub Foundation are still fighting the fight is a thrill in itself. | 2008, CLR. Until now, Brian Sanhaji was mostly known for his haunting live sets and the numerous releases on his label "Enable Recordings". Stereotype is the first release from Brian Sanhaji, and a piece of sonic artistry that cuts through the air with a crystal-clear sound. This is a minimal album in which less says more, in which house and dub vie as sources of stylistic influence. These musical forces are kept in check by the albums unifying sound; the sound of techno. The albums clear sound is a testament to its well balanced production. Brian ensured that this clarity is never icy or indifferent by using predominantly analogue equipment which gives the album's sound a distinct human warmth and gentility. The albums name implies conformity, but in fact the album it is the very opposite of this - it is a complex, independent definition of sound that is constantly unfolding and re-inventing itself, and a promising debut by an evidently talented electronic musician. |

Following in the footsteps of Fatboy Slim, The Flaming Lips and Groove Armada, Arctic Monkeys' drummer Matt Helders has compiled a series of tunes that he typically plays after a night out. It turns out to be more diverse than one would perhaps expect. A compilation of the drummers' favorite ever tracks varying from rock n roll to hip hop, it also includes a spoken word piece from Arctic Monkeys band mate Al turner and Matt's own cover of the club hit 'Dreamer'. Helders was Dj-ing long before he picked up his drumsticks and has recently been performing at Ibiza rocks and Field Day whilst also creating remixes for artists Roots Manuva, Duran Duran & We Are Scientists. |

| 2008, Spekk. Misterrious is a wonderfully put together album of friendly and warm music with just the right amount of experimentalism and more than its fair share of beauty. Organic instruments combine with electronic processing and structuring to give you a series of tracks that have numerous reference points, but manage to sound like nothing other than an Andrey Kiritchenko album. Once again one of the main features of his work is the piano which he uses in isolation on some tracks and as part of the whole lovely ensemble on others. It's lightly rhythmic and full of passion and for those that enjoyed the Alps album on Spekk, Andrey's previous album, this is another must-listen. Pure class. Ambient, Downtempo, Modern Classical |

Pigeons aren't necessarily the first birds that come to mind when we think of funk, but that doesn't mean these rats of the street don't know a stonecold groove when they hear one. Pigeon Funk boasts an all-star line-up of electronic producers: Kit Clayton, Safety Scissors and Sutekh, whose combined efforts have as much to do with angular pop music as they do adventurous and elaborate sound mangling. As electronic musicians go, despite their leanings towards the dancefloor these three are among the more technical and academically minded, and that certainly shines through on this messy yet hugely enjoyable jaunt through free form digital chaos. Palatul Universul, care nu prea era palat in sinea lui, le-a facut o mica surpriza organizatorilor si invitatilor, 2 calorifere sparte la etajul superior au dat nastere unei cascade (mai de graba o cataracta) ce semana leit cu fengshuiul de la vila tantareanu. Intrand in sala de spectacole, feelingul de underground era la el acasa: intuneric, sunet disparat, tipete de ras, apa pe jos, oameni cu glugi pe cap si miros de .. de.. ceai. OH da! Underground again. Grand si Nemo au facut un warm up cinstit (i like them better than turntable science) si la subiect, apoi a venit asiaticul. Da, in spate se auzea prost. Nu, nici in fata nu se auzea prea bine. Dar da, puteai sa simti vibe-ul in primele randuri, acolo unde sugerez sa va postati atunci cand vociferarile grupurilor socializatoare depasesc decibelii boxelor.
Si aici revin la prima propozitie. Toata lumea s-a asteptat sa vina si sa scratchuiasca doua viniluri pana ne iese pe urechi tiuitul inaltelor sau vajaitul acului pe vinil. Dar nu, dom'le, se pare ca Q-Bert a vrut sa ne arate altceva. Ei bine, va spun eu, ca vad ca blogosfera doarme cand vine vorba de petreceri cu putine logo-uri pe poster. A fost cel mai bun, smecher, dragut, profesionist, amuzant si mai melodios set de funk, acid funk cantat in boxele bucurestene ever. Asa a inceput. Nu a dat la manivela (scratch) prea mult, nu a facut exces de sunete, nu a stricat beatul cu catzsh catzsh in continuu, ne-a lasat sa dansam, sa ne simtim bine si sa ascultam Funk, frate. Pe masura ce se incalzea atmosfera, a inceput si el sa ne arate cum sta treaba cu turntable-ismul asta. Rapper's delight cantat doar din scratch cred ca a fost highlightul serii, bineinteles precedat de multe alte interventii in care omul (se vedea clar) dorea sa-i impresioneze si sa-i lase gura casca pe romani. Si a reusit. Te uitai la fetele din primele randuri, ranjind parca fara voia lor; erau momente cand nici nu puteai sa dansezi pt ca te uitai la el cu mare atentie sa vezi the magik. Oh. Ce set, ce artist, ce party, ce zi. Cu greu l-a lasat publicul sa plece de la platane, singura sa eschiva era avionul care trebuia prins in cateva zeci de minute. TRG, Bully si MC bean au urcat pe scena, dar numai TRG a ramas cu dubstepul de ora 5 dimineata. Pana si cei mai obositi dansau alaturi de TRG. Din cauza lui nici nu am putut sa plec acasa sa ma odihnesc. Cu greu am gasit un ride home and I called it a night.

"At the end of 1951, the composer and musicologist Herbert Eimert initiated a studio for electronic music at the WDR in Cologne, which under his direction and the growing reputation of Karlheinz Stockhausen became a meeting place for international composers. In works like Studie 1 (i.e., Study 1; 1953), Stockhausen used sinus tones (pure tones without overtones) and tape recorders. "Every existing sound, every noise, is a mixture of such sinus tones - a spectrum. The number, intervals and volume relations of such sinus tones constitute the distinctiveness of each spectrum. | 2008, Hymen. "Digital Darkness" is the newest chapter in the Healy Brothers legacy and their fifth full-length release for the well-respected Hymen Records. While known for their selected brand of stabbing, dark IDM and furious drum'n'bass collages, Somatic Responses take their formula one step backwards this time by adding a variety of squelching 303-style acid tweaking and marginal vocal samples to their recipe. Tempos run high here, spewing forth fifteen neurotic and maddening tracks of glitch-laden, headache-inducing, face-slapping aural onslaughts driven by layer after layer of disconcerting vintage synthlines and brain-battering beat work. Though many intriguing sounds are present throughout the album, it may be challenging for some listeners to distinguish one bewildering track from the next. The intention behind this mishmash of exhaustive noise archetypes may be difficult to surmise for those not familiar with Somatic Responses' style, however existing fans should find a meaty assortment of din delicacies to ingest here. Frigul, ploaia, crivatul si netul de 100 de mega era cat pe ce sa ma faca sa nu ies din casa vineri, 7 noiembrie, anul acesta. Ma gandeam ca vor fi doar 1000 de oameni, infrigurati si intr-atat de beti incat sa vorbeasca doar intre ei. Taxi la Romaero, cateva sute de metri prin frig si am ajuns. Laserele sunt deja expirate pentru mine. Chiar nu prea poti sa ma dai pe spate cu lumina asta verde de mi-o bagi pana in fundul ochiului. Au intrat si Underworld: Karl Hyde, Rick Smith si Darren Price (inlocuitorul lui Darren Emerson) pentru ca DA, sunt trei in formatia asta (aviz blogosferei). Sunt trei de pe la sfarsitul anilor 80, nu e ca si cum a aparut unul nou dintr-o data. In fine.
Concertul a inceput, in fata basul e mult prea tare pentru urechile mele uzate asa ca mergem in spate sa stam cu mainile in san, sa comentam. Lume nu prea era (pt mine era de asteptat), frig, bere rece si multi curiosi (probabil loviti cu invitatii fara numar). Ei bine, in sfarsit pot sa spun si eu clar si precis ca la acest concert muzica a salvat seara. Creative Electronica, bass de techno, riffuri de chitara, clape, sintetizator, tot tacamul, un performance live de toata frumusetea. A fost ce trebuie, au cantat peste asteptari, iar decorul cu stalpii luminati te baga intr-un film colorat, din care puteai sa sustragi tot ce aveai nevoie ca sa simti ca nu ai batut drumul degeaba. Magnific bre. Au cantat asa de bine incat lumea a inceput sa tipe, sa aplaude, sa lase vodka deoparte si sa ceara mai mult. In conditiile date, a fost un eveniment de succes si speram ca va urma.

Sambata, domnisoara Mary Anne Hobbs a salvat si ea noaptea din Fabrica cu un set exceptional. Cred ca a vrut sa-l impresioneze pe TRG, intrucat a fost cu mult peste setul de la Sonar, spre exemplu. Dubstep de cea mai buna calitate, plus experimental electronica. In baia de minori, lumea buna dadea din cap cu ochii tintiti spre blonda. Premiera si pentru mine, intrucat l-am vazut pe de-dans miscandu-se pe dubstep cu zambetul pe buze, in sfarsit si in fabrica.:)
In concluzie: Muzica a salvat weekendul. Trecand peste conditii, sonorizare, organizare, lasere, preturi, public sau campanie politica, putem spune cu mana pe inima: last weekend the DJ saved my night! |

| 2008, Mosz. 'Till The World's Blown Up And A New One Is Created is the name of the new group project created by Austrian musicians Christian Fennesz, Martin Brandlmayr and Werner Dafeldecker. These three are certainly no strangers to one another's work, having all collaborated together under various improvisational formats, most notably as Polwechsel. This album began life with each member of the trio composing their own short piece of music, edited from a number of improvised sessions. Once these individual tracks had been completed, they in turn were dissected - each one being stripped down to a few key fragments which were then used as the building blocks for a single long composition. This thirty-five minute work took the group some four years of what they call "intermittent activity", ultimately resulting in the incredibly abstract final product, which constitutes the entirety of the first volume on this double-disc release. The project's trademark of dark soundscapes and well-placed rhythms (mixed with a soundtrack type feel) can also be found within this new work. What might be a bit surprising though is the emphasis on rhythm. Together with his friend Takeshi Nishimoto he sits back on the veranda of postrock-instrumentals and relaxes. Tejada on drums, guitar and electronics, Nishimoto on guitar and bass dream away their day - and make ours. With airy gestures and a sunny state of mind, they jam themselves into textures which have learned their lesson from the best records of the Chicago school: jazzrock does not have to be a pretentious monster, but can sing a poem of the utopia of unhierachical communication. At their most pure and powerful, the Detroit and Berlin techno styles can share an almost classical aesthetic and execution that combines a sensuous textural and rhythmic approach with a cool and futuristic attitude to musical structure and architecture. It's an aesthetic that leads to sonic art with a sense of transport and transcendence that is at once spacious and inclusive: dub and DJ and adventurism combining in a democratic and utopian music for dancing and dreaming. Carl Craig and Moritz von Oswald have been at the vanguard of efforts to extend techno into collaborations - with other artists, in other styles and genres - that go much deeper than just adding beats and filters to pre-existing approaches. Thus, their collaborative move to "recompose" by deconstructing, rebuilding and expanding upon orchestrations by Maurice Ravel makes utter sense. ne-am uitat la soulwacsi digeind prea multi in versiunea de noapte, seara dupa seara si am simtit ca sunt parte a unei realitati colective in care exista exista indivizi cu care te intersectezi si cu care ajungi sa rontzai la aceeasi bucata de experienta, complicitar, incheiand cu un zambet bilateral care ajunge in casuta aia de zambete pe care o ai acasa pe raft. am simtit toate momentele alea posibile, asta e una dintre cele mai frumoase realitati pe care le-as fi putut inventa si ma bucur de ea, nu ma mai plang de trafic sau de fundurile de la ghiseu, ma bucur ca deschid calculatorul si verific blogurile, downloadez muzica, ma entuziasmez, suntem bine. e bine. efuzionam si ne contrapunctam.

| zoom image - Avand in vedere ca Gavrila&Asociatii este co-castigatoare a trofeului categoriei "Viral" a festivalului Internetics, cu binecunoscutul poem video "Tractir", cativa membri ai susnumitei agentii s-au aratat intrigati moderat de comunicatul agentiei Next, intitulat "Next domina viralul". Pentru a media problema cu precizie si echidistanta, G&A s-a adresat autoritatii in domeniu, ANMC (Agentia Nationala de Masuratori si Circumferinte). Autoritatea in cauza, dupa ce a efectuat o serie de masuratori minutioase, a elaborat un raport din care ne permitem sa citam: "Dupa incheierea setului complet de analize de laborator (subler analog, histograma Brauner, bombardament cu LCD-uri, coproscopie la cald) putem concluziona ca trofeul obtinut de G&A contine o concentratie superioara de platina-ceea ce face ca si culoarea sa fie mai atragatoare, dovedeste calitati fizice remarcabile, este mult mai dezvoltat si da un sentiment de robustete, sanatate si prosperitate. Trofeul Next dovedeste calitati fizice net inferioare, ce mai incoace si incolo, e pipernicit si are un aer stingher. Deci, daca e sa fie o singura agentie care sa domine viralul, aceea e Gavrila&Asociatii. Pentru a sustine autenticitatea aceste declaratii, atasez si dovada faptica, o fotografie din timpul anchetei. | 2008, Gomma. Munich-based electronic producer Mathias Modica is certainly a busy guy - as well as forming one-half of electronic pop duo Munk alongside regular studio collaborator Jonas Imbery, he's also responsible for founding and co-running the fashionably trendy Gomma label, home to Whomadewho, Rodion and Headman. Four years on from Munk's debut album 'Aperitivo', this follow-up 'Cloudbuster' sees Modica and Imbery offering up a collection that's arguably less eclectic than its predecessor, but definitely no less stylish. Full of nice little touches, and a sound that is both current and retro, this is taking the whole disco / electro sound where Headman should have gone. However, to call this either disco or electro would not really be accurate. |
