New on Jazzanova's offshoot series Elektrisch, Roland Appel's Talk To Your Angel is billed as a more forward thinking piece of work than the regular strand of Sonar Kollektiv releases might ordinarily accommodate. A member of SK regulars Truby Trio, Appel has been a solo entity since 2004, but this is his first full-length, compiling the various singles he's released for the label, and throwing a variety of previously unheard, fresh productions into the bargain. You can spot the disco, obviously the house and shades of techno and even jazz, but this is a perfect example of the total being greater than the parts. | 2008, The Social Registry. It's a familiar trajectory. Dudes in rock and hardcore bands get tired of the formal constraints of said idioms so they pull out some effects pedals and see what happens. What starts with a desire to retreat from the transparency of unadorned instrumental performance or the perceived narrow geometry of rock often ends in a haze of delay and fuzz (or, more perilously perhaps, phasers and flangers). As a stylistic shift, it's neither inherently boom nor bust, but most fail to invest enough energy and true experimentation to get past the rather stock music that such an approach initially produces. Growing have followed this path with enough duration and intensity to make some innovative and compelling music. A comparison to Black Dice wouldn't be entirely erroneous but there's something unique about Growing's stroboscopic, spirographic compositions, propelling the sound palette of the electric guitar into hitherto uncharted domains. Metaform, like most sprawling, sample-centric instrumental hip hop albums is the product of one man with a deep sense of hip hop's musical family tree who is willing to spend countless hours in his studio working out the minute details of each track. The most obvious comparisons would be the likes of Danger Mouse and RJD2, but also The Avalanches and DJ Shadow, especially for the fusion of finely knit-together samples and overt pop music. The tone of the samples used tends to be of the jazz-inflected, smooth '70s soul variety, lending itself well to Metaform's penchant for shaping new song structures out of old ones. The knack for fashioning a beat is just as refined though, and results in some heavy, but ultimately quite emotive productions. Instrumental Hip Hop, Electronica. just great |

Having established himself on the UK hip hop scene with Kids In Tracksuits, Nottingham musician Matt Cutler is now branching out on his own, with a fresh, intriguing new take on chilled out electronica. Wonky heads take note - if you're into the whole Flying Lotus / Samiyam / Rustie / Lukid thing - this is just the ticket. Deriving its name from a lost, mythical continent, Lemurian has little to do with lost undersea cities and the like, although there is something ever so slightly fantastical about these heavily compressed instrumental hip hop productions and their evocative song titles. The seventeen short tracks resemble a series of sketches, taking a few simple ideas and developing them without excessive elaboration. Crunchy beats add grit to the sweetness, as does Cutler's fondness for introducing dissonant effects that sound like samples from heat-warped vinyl or dashboard-baked cassette tape. | 2008, Warp/ The Social Registry. The band includes Lizzi Bougatsos, Brian Degraw, Tim Dewit, and Josh Diamond. They craft world-beat-meets-moog tracks, with recordings veering in between the ethnographic and the experimental. Words that could be (and probably have been) applied to Gang Gang Dance include but are not limited to: eclectic, refreshing, unusual, unexpected, energetic, experimental, twitchy, graceful, shimmering, spastic, careful, random, choral, tribal, organic, bizarre. Genres which could be referenced to describe their new album Saint Dymphna include: glitch, acid jazz, post-rock, world beat, hip-hop, ambient, indie pop, psych, dance-punk, trance (for crying out loud). None of these terms would make much sense strung together - except in the context of the deeply weird and oddly enjoyable attention-deficit collage of sounds that is Saint Dymphna. On record, the band's remarkable energy often falls flat and their eclecticism is more distracting than compelling. Yet as compared to their previous efforts, the album is surprisingly accessible and at times almost poppy - a valiant attempt at distilling, or translating, the Gang Gang Dance experience into the album format. |

| 2008, Room 40. Over the past two decades, DJ Olive has been a central figure in New York's diverse sonic underground. As a member of WE(tm), DJ Olive created three stunning records that came to epitomize the Brooklyn Illbient explosion. The album represents the auditory document of an installation at this year's Whitney Biennial, which hosted the first playback of this hour-long piece, but the music transfers itself exceptionally well into the context of home listening. DJ Olive is joined by a host of collaborators and contributors, all assisting in the pursuit of this most quiet and subtly detailed of compositions, the most prominent of whom is Christian Fennesz, who assists in production and processing. During the sixty minutes over which it exists, 'Triage' drifts between vast, warm, electric tones, dissolved instrumental performances (there's even some bagpipe in here) and airy, low volume location sounds. His music is oriented on Europeans like Vogel and Isoleé rather than on the early Detroit masters. And if a young producer already hits the top 50 with his 5th release, it some kind of sensation. As an experienced dj his repertoire reaches from "clikish three- dimensional micro-house" to "straight-up contemporary techno" and merges his various facets to an individual style. | 2007, Raster-Noton. Raster-Noton has made a name for itself as a purveyor of clean and often clinical, cutting edge minimalism. Senking's (Jens Massel) List, then, appears to be something of a mould-breaker, an atypical release from a label with so much minimal tradition. This is not to say that List is not minimal; in many ways it is, but there is a significant filmic quality and emotional back-story shot through this release that makes it stand out from the crowd, much as Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto's collaborative projects did. It is a surprisingly claustrophobic affair with deep dark oozing's of molten bass underpinning skittering micro-claps, spliced snares and well carved, twitching industrial sounds. Snares often form military-esque patterns creating a self-perpetuating energy whilst driving semi-industrial bass motif's echo those of dubstep luminaries such as Kode9 and Loefah, and there is a definite nod towards the deep driving industrial bass exercises of Amon Tobin. |

| 2008, Infine Music. Trained as a classic pianist at Julliard, Francesco Tristano has actively fused his avant-garde piano with electronic textures and beats, including work with some awfully big names. This release also co-stars the godfather of dub dance Moritz Von Oswald. As subtle rhythms start to creep in, the piano continues to mutate, the beats become more and more pronounced, and anything that once sounded like a live instrument has long since disappeared, replaced by horror-movie screeches and synthetic tones. At 10 minutes in, a bass drum finally appears and the cacophony dies down a bit, as the piece finally tips into a full-on dub-techno rumble, equal parts freaked-up electronic noise and prime-time Berlin beatwork. From there on out, the "destroying/creating" aspect is in full flight, as the rhythms pummel, the crazed electronic notes get freakier and it becomes impossible to tell if things are building, decomposing or simultaneously doing both. | 2006, Planet Mu. Inspired by the soundtracks to mainstream horror/sci-fi movie classics such as Nosferatu and Metropolis, Jason Kohnen and Gideon Kiers formed The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble around 2000. Drafting in session players to add conventional instruments such as trombone, cello and guitar, the duo deliver here a collection of cinematic soundscapes, stitched together by menacing computer programming. Glitchy electronics provide some menacing overtones, painting images of dangerous back alleys, rain soaked pavements, and dark shadowy misdeeds hidden beneath the outward glamour of rows of pristine street lighting - David Lynch would be proud. Certainly not what you would expect from the Planet Mu label - despite it's historical diversity, but the album undoubtedly achieves what it sets out to accomplish. IDM, Future Jazz, Experimental |

Trei exemple, toate foarte recente, din trei domenii:
-auto: Piata autoturismelor noi a scazut cu 30% (cifra aproximativa) fata de aceeasi perioada a anului trecut. Pentru cei cu constiinta treaza, termenul corect e "drama". In asemenea conditii, un coleg se poarta gratios cu industria si vrea sa-si cumpere o masina noua. Suna la reprezentanta (nu-i dam numele pentru ca e un fost client) si cere o oferta de pret. Azi se implineste spatamana de cand n-a primit-o.
-papetarie: Comandam la firma Office Depo, un top de hartie foto Epson. Cel care ne aduce pachetul, ne cearta de la deschiderea usii: "A venit comanda. Ce sa zic, marea comanda!"
-catering: Comandam de la Fabio Pizza in valoare de 62RON, 620.000ROL. Muia nu intarzie sa apara, vine pe un ton glaciar precum pizzele: "Sa stiti ca e ultima oara cand va livram, daca veti mai comanda asa de putin."
Le dorim, tuturor celor trei firme, poate chiar si intregilor domenii din care fac parte, o intalnire cat mai rapida cu termeni de care n-au mai auzit pana acum: restructurare, somaj, faliment, foame.

The first offering from the DFA-affiliated Supersoul Recordings is an omnivorous affair, offering up techno, house, Italo, space disco and krautrock experimentation on a compilation that collects two year's of vinyl and digital releases from the Berlin-based imprint. Because the material is from a German operation, there are minimalist 4/4 techno rhythms and laptop glitch-stutters. But there's also a deep love for Eighties analog sounds - fat, asymmetrical sequences, Arthur Baker-style electro-pop riffing, even Remain in Light-era Talking Heads funk rock. Supersoul gets a solid grade for doing its homework and turning it on time, but now it's got to prepare for some bigger tests. |

| 2008, HOSS. Crunchy, crackling, and noisy, Belly is a blistering blast of deconstructed hip-hop from the Washington D.C.- based trio Food For Animals. You could say that Food for Animals are part of the current hip-hop zeitgeist. Like any progressive B-boy lustfully idolizing the indie-dance scene, the quartet plays with Baltimore club beats, and their tracks have a certain fission reminiscent of Justice. But Food for Animals are too intellectual and clever for the hipsters. Producer Ricky Rabbit eschews easy 4/4 bass patterns for stop-start drum percussion, layers on harsh cascades of post-punk noise, and slices up vocals and samples into little daggers that stab up the track. In fifteen tracks and just under forty minutes, the group slams together everything from sandblasted jazz loops to drill-and-bass freakouts and glitchy meltdowns. Murmur are possibly the most self restrained and least derivative operators in dub techno right now, and over the course of a handful of scarce twelves they've slowly gestated a frayed hybrid of minimal construction and fathomless bass that has less in common with the hallowed Basic Channel axis then the work of most of their contemporaries. "Undertone" is clearly one of the years most significant dub techno releases (and it really barely fits under that bracket), a towering achievement crowning a year that's already given us essential material from the likes of the Styrax, Mojuba, SYNTH and Echospace labels, and is a perfect counterpoint to the year's (2007) other big release in this field - Deepchord's brilliant "Coldest Season". In weekend, e pro evolution soccer 2009 time. So, la prietenul Ioja e mai greu sa creem o atmosfera de vis, asa ca dupa multe playlisturi de funk, in sfarsit am inceput sa aud culori. Ba un bonobo, tricky, aphex twin, xploading plasix, nightmare on wax.. lista continua. Ce s-a intamplat de fapt? Ei bine, am aflat si eu de aparitia unui post online de radio, downtempo, acid jazz, electronica numai bun de birouri cu multi angajati unde un album Venetian Snares ar cam face scandal. Pro FM Sofa este un post de radio OK, pe alocuri BUN. Asadar, there is still hope. Aflam de la profm ca este vorba de un proiect marca DJ Mike (Mihai Gurei), care, cred eu este jumatate din Grand si Nemo.

| 2008, Anticon. There's a clean, architectural feeling to Son Lux's Anticon debut, At War with Walls and Mazes. Every orchestral flourish, muffled hip-hop beat, and defeated sigh are arranged and connected in an almost unseeingly straightforward manner. Ryan Lott chooses to be perfectly spare and linear, while many of his peers (especially on Anticon) swath their 'master builder' tendencies in tonal chaos. The result, At War with Walls and Mazes, is a dense, meticulously crafted haze of Baroque instrumentation, electronic pulses and hip-hop beats. Overstuffed with samples, sounds and styles, Walls and Mazes seems like the very definition of 'aural overload' on first blush. Lott obviously has no shortage of ideas; the downside is that it often feels like he's trying to cram every last one into his songs. Despite this fact, there are rewards to be had here for the patient listener - the sort of person who doesn't mind digging in his or her heels until melodies start to blossom.
