2009, Progressive Form. Much of the success formula of Linear Cryptics (2006) is brought on to the new album where Ametsub continues to play around in his tricky IDM universe made of glitch, cut-up -vocals, -melodies, -rhythms and weird sounds that are united in a contradictory, but beautiful harmony. In the duration of the roughly 50 minute, 12 track long album, Ametsub toys playfully with harmonies, melancholy, jazz elements, funk grooves and even dub, taking unexpected twists that at times seems counter-intuitive, but in its entirety becomes quite natural. It has the telefon tel aviv touch in it. Electronica, Glitch, IDM

2009, Freerange Records. Counting luminaries such as Ewan Pearson, Danny Howells, Prins Thomas, Osunlade as well as the inimitable Laurent Garnier and Sebo K as fans of this years underground hit 'Ghosts in My Machines', and with releases to date on such revered dance labels as Glasgow Underground, Freerange, Tsuba, Urbantorque, Silver Network and Icon, Glasgow's Milton Jackson remains a force to be reckoned with when it comes to forward thinking, club friendly tracks. Driving 16th note synth and bass patterns make sure things roll along with the pace and weight of the Silver Streak whilst the chords will make sure this one becomes one to remember at many an early morning session involving some degree of hedonism. 2009, Smallfish. Wil Bolton and Shay Nassi both release themselves from their main projects (Cheju and Mise En Scene respectively) to form Shail, in a release for Smallfish that now sees that imprint making the transition from 8cm to full length works. 'Patterns', mastered by none other than 12k maestro Taylor Deupree, is essentially a collection of 6 rhythmic and semi-rhythmic abstract pieces, taken from single sources, seemingly based on loops and samples interfacing with grainy textures and more formal abstract elements. This is not glossy minimalism, nor is it clicks and cuts territory. Each piece exploits the digital medium, using the full auditory spectrum to great effect, panning and shifting sounds around, and re-configuring the envelope, drawing frequencies in and out of perceptual focus for analysis. Patterns is the perfect name for this collection, as it asserts itself within the areas of repetition, and iteration, using the loop as the device upon which to build peripheral elements, interventions that gradually swell and evolve, taking in everything from expansive, almost ambient tonalism, to pure glitchy electronica. Electronic, Abstract, Ambiental.

2009, BPitch. The marriage between Modeselektor and Apparat is now fully consummated. The troika, which released the 'Auf Kosten Der Gesundheit' EP in 2002 is now proud to present the LP. It gets better: this fairytale collaboration was recorded in analog at Berlin's famed Hansa Studios, where David Bowie created his masterpiece 'Heroes'. Additionally, the trio made use of the studio's old-school tube technology, a venerable EMI console from 1972 and a vintage EMT Model 140 Plate Reverb found on eBay USA. American software designer, Joshua Kit Clayton, was hired to program a superb reverb algorithm specifically for the recording process of this album. This exquisite sound design is one of the reasons why the promotional copies can be listened to only in mono. Finished copies will, of course, be in full stereo. The self-titled album will also be available as a limited edition DVD produced by the Berlin based artist collective Pfadfinderei, feature music videos and more exclusive content. Pfadfinderei will also contribute visuals to all Moderat live shows. Electronica, Electro.
Oren Ambarchi - Persona

2009, Black Truffle, reissue from 2000 (E.R.S.). 'Persona' was recorded in February 2000, just a week after the 'Afternoon Tea' collaboration with Fennesz, Pimmon, Pita and Keith Rowe. Utilizing a raw and spontaneous approach like the 'Stacte' series of solo releases, Ambarchi recorded the pieces on 'Persona' at home in a day, only using his guitar, a handful of effect pedals and a boombox as a monitor. Considered to be a 'sister' release to Ambarchi's acclaimed 'Suspension' album on Touch, the material on 'Persona' was only heard by a handful of listeners. From the late 90's his experiments in guitar abstraction and extended technique led to a more personal and unique soundworld and 'Persona' was an early document of this direction. Here, the pieces are hesitant and tense extended songforms, located in the cracks between several schools: modern electronics and processing; laminal improvisation and minimalism; and hushed, pensive songwriting. 2009. I really cannot find anything on this artist, including the label. A small myspace (click photo) and that he/she is from US. But it does not matter because the music says it all. Like the title, the album enjoys some decent figures of instrumental hip-hop, conversed into trip hop and a capability of making every track flow into the next, giving the beat a concerning attention. Layered electronics fill in the blanks and the rusty downtempo feel is right by your side all the time. Instrumental hip-hop, Trip-hop, Electronica

2009, Plug Research. The producer/MC born Aleksander Manfredi takes the next logical step and releases his first instrumental album, Radio, named after one of today's oft-disregarded mediums, which he mined for samples to give a voice to his thoughts and views. The result is 15 tracks of aural imagery, covering heavier topics such as politics, spirituality and religion, sampling people like philosopher Alan Watts and President George W. Bush over beats that are at times, abrasive and mechanical, at others lush and melodic. As a whole, the beats on Radio are more evocative than they are musical and as cohesive of a message as it may put forth, perhaps the only major drawback is the innately limited replay value that plagues most instrumental albums. 2009, Aus. Is there any contemporary band that hasn't been influenced by dub? Ex-Fink (Ninja Tune) singer/songwriter/producer Finn Greenall's new outfit, Sideshow, certainly has. Not that it's a bad thing; endlessly reverberating layers of bass waves and spacey textures can connect a lot of musical ideas. It's taken from live takes with an accomplished live band for a start, so there's a real, rich sound throughout with the sort of imperfections that ooze charm. As with previous Sideshow output, 'Admit One' is a shining beacon of a real dub feeling in every sense where instrumentals mesmerize and vocal contributions from Tina Grace, Paul St. Hilaire and Cortney Tidwell rouse. Prefuse 73 - Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian

2009, Warp. "I wouldn't be able to explain this record from my perspective other than saying that it was a labor intensive and analog heavy affair. Nonetheless, I sometimes think it's the most 'straight ahead' Prefuse record I've ever made. The next time I listen to it, I think it's quite possibly the most obscure record I've ever made without ever intending it to be," said Guillermo Scott Herren when describing the album. Warp Records describes it so: "... Herren rejected the idea of straight digital recording and instead went the much more intensive route of recording to analog Ampex tape, giving the album the sound of a lost tape of exploratory studio musicians from the not-too-distant past. In addition to the recording process, Ampexian also differs in its composition, existing as a tapestry of tracks of varying lengths and moods, albeit with a remarkable linear flow and, of course, unmatched rhythmic bump." 2009, Shoreless. Brock has given us yet another incredibly thoughtful collection of tracks with this mostly ambient, lightly drone-esque album. There are trademarks here, such as the depth of the chords and the tangible emotion within the tracks, yet it's paced in quite a different way to some of his other work. I always feel this is my favorite style by him and certainly this is a slice of pure class. When the beats do come in they're distant, fuzzy and do a very fine job of underpinning the musical elements. Ambiental, Abstract

2009, Schema. D'Improvviso recalls places and tastes connected to the Brazilian music of the past and in particular to the '60s. Beautiful bossa from Rosalia De Souza - and a set that's got a sweet little difference from some of her earlier Schema albums! This time around, the sound is warmly acoustic throughout - very jazz-based, and wrapped around Rosalia's vocals wonderfully - sometimes with a groove that's right in club jazz territory, other times with a mellower vibe that really fits the bossa spirit of the material! It was worth waiting more than a year for the second aural manifestation of Shane Talada's darker self. Marching Dynamics's unique mix of intelligent dance music, dark experimental sound layers and technoid beat'n'bass patterns enthused a large audience worldwide. Now it's the time for the workers party of Thaiti to take over. Music as diverse as moody atmospheric dark ambient tunes, slow hop-beat-driven sub-bass monsters and fast dance tracks. Crisp percussion blasts meet soundtrackish synth lines while aggravating your somatic responses - distortion from Detroit meets with Los(t) Angeles. 2009, Bid Dada. Ninja Tune veteran Amon Tobin has long flirted with hip-hop rhythms, even as his music largely tends towards massive breaks and dark, sinewy drum-and-bass rhythms. But with Two Fingers, his new project with Joe Chapman (aka Doubleclick), Tobin brings that influence to the fore. Two Fingers' music is a sparse bump of hip-hop that has been blended with the twitch of dubstep, the pace of grime, and the bass of dnb, resulting in tunes which can be stealthy and brittle, booming and sexy or towering and monolithic. A truly international project, Two Fingers conjures up images of Blade Runner re-enacted in South Tottenham - an urban snapshot of the future filtered through a hi tech lens. Birthed as a transatlantic experiment, Amon and Joe's attempts to graft drum and bass production techniques to hip hop templates resulted in something truly unique. Electronica, Grime, Hip-Hop

2009, Compost. There was a persistent, smoky jazz flavor that weaved its way throughout Alif Tree's "French Cuisine". Vinyl crackles, dusty instrumentation and vocals from classic jazz singers like Nina Simone and Shirley Horn were a strong component to the sound. For his new album, imagine Alif has spent some time watching seasons of The Soprano's and discovering a more vibrant, trip-hop influenced personality to his taste in jazz. Just as with French Cuisine, this new album Clockwork explores a variety of jazz, blues and acoustic folk influenced phases. It's not often you come across the odd combination of DJ/producer/sound engineer/chef, but Marseille-based DJ Alif Tree is exactly that. Acid Jazz, Downtempo, Blues

Massive Attack long ago proved their importance in the tastemaking aural soundscape department - and this funky compilation of of tunes they've sampled works is a mighty fine set - whether you're interested in blueprint material for the classic trip hop pioneers or just love spacey soul and slow rolling funk! This precedes the 2007 rapster release of Daft Punk Discovered: a collection of songs sampled by Daft Punk. The set is steeped heavily in tunes that delicate balance mellow grooves with spacier touches, often with some of the mellower material by acts capable of rugged funk - so there is a gritty bottom end to even the more atmospheric tunes - with great stuff by Lowrell, Billy Cobham, Isaac Hayes, William DeVaughn, Pieces Of A Dream, James Brown, Rufus & Chaka Kahn, and more! Hannu's sublime debut album 'Worms In My Piano' tapped into a rich vein of delicately abstract electronic music spearheaded by the likes of Colleen and Hannu's compatriots on Fonal - most notably Es, whose rough-edged loops and folksy otherness found a kindred spirit. This new album for the excellent Kesh label takes the agenda a step further into loveliness, embracing harps, glockenspiels, and all manner of frost-dappled samples, evoking a wintry wonderland filmed in Super-8, full of grains and vintage production quirks. 2009, Emego. On first glance Lucio Capece and Mika Vainio seem unlikely partners. Two standard bearers at opposing poles of extremity, both sonically and geographically. Lucio from Argentina and rooted in a traditions of jazz and Improv, while Mika hailing from Finland sourced in early 90s electronic and Industrial scenes. However, they both share an alarming attention to detail when it comes to their audio compositions, and neither are afraid of pushing boundaries of abstraction to the limit. With this in mind its with great pleasure that Editions Mego issues their first album as a duo. Recorded over a 2 year period in Berlin (their common chosen home), its as startling as it is visceral. Delicate as it is extreme. Huge blasting slabs of concrete sax geometrically oppose sonic taps of electronic sound, which bring about a fascinating sound palette. 2009, Carpark. Dan Deacon, Baltimore electro-terrorist and owner of the strangest spectacles seen since Su Pollard finally gave up her dream of becoming a yellowcoat, is back with another eleven track lucky dip and a 15-piece instrumental ensemble. As with previous Deacon releases, 'Bromst' ranges from the damn near essential to the patently irritating. The record is described as "much darker", "mature" and "organic" writing in an email: "I wanted a more overall organic timbre for this album. My last record was very much synthetic, and that was the point. A wider scope of sound sources then just my pedals and synthesis was the timbral goal of this album." Deacon continued by citing his growing popularity as something that has allowed him to experiment with different sounds, explaining, "my approach to writing changed. Not to say they aren't dance songs, but they are more about mass movement rather than dancing at a party. They are more developed, focused pieces. Sort of like a culmination of my past few years of noise-based pop songs. There are still tracks that I think are the party-type jammers I'm associated with, but there are also a lot more tracks that are great for relaxing or just listening to." 2009, Lex. Following up his tremendous Beat Journey album, Shape Of Broad Minds' Jneiro Jarel returns to his Dr Who Dat? guise with a brand new set of compositions for Lex. Since his last solo outing we've been spoiled by sublime, low-end heavy productions from the likes of Flying Lotus, raising the instrumental hip hop bar ever upwards, but Jarel is up to the challenge, dropping a severe bass payload of his own featured by some hyper-compressed acid-hop. 2009, Tympanik Audio. After two critically-acclaimed albums, 'Can You Hear My Call?' and 2007's 'Faces', Stendeck brings his signature sound home to the Tympanik Audio family for a brilliant new full-length CD album titled 'Sonnambula'. Combining epic synth patterns with stunning piano movements and a subtle dose of distorted rhythmic beats, Stendeck's long-awaited new album 'Sonnambula' injects an air of originality and purpose that will both inspire and move you to elated heights. With one astounding song composition after the next, 'Sonnambula' conjures up the true ingredients of intelligent electronica, driven by distortion-tinged beats, soaring synth-lines, and modern classical elements that spew emotion from every surface. Zeitkratzer & Carsten Nicolai - Electronics

2008, Zeitkratzer Records. "This cd documents the cooperation between zeitkratzer and Carsten Nicolai (aka Alva Noto) started nearly a decade ago; a cooperation between an avantgarde ensemble and a non-academic electronic musician. The electronic music of Carsten Nicolai - partly being of even aseptic clearness and quality suddenly becomes sensual and physical through zeitkratzer's instrumental sounds. Inversely, zeitkratzer sounds different too: in "5 min" the musicians play only electric sound generators: humming of plugs, the peeping of the synchronised zeitkratzer-clocks, white noise, TV cheeping at 10 kHz. "Synchron Bitwave", the latest piece is the most sensual and warmest; no other sounds than a small third and its electric derivates, finally leading to high, dabbed string spiccati. While "c1" transfers electronically conceived asymmetrical loops into a 19-16th rhythm. A strange undertow results, partly because of the pieces' grounding with merging split sounds. Here, Carsten Nicolai virtually becomes metaphysical, perhaps even romantic...". Experimental, Abstract, Modern Classical.

2008, Statik Entertainment. After his awesome releases "Starless" and "Starless Reshapes" Daniel Stefanik brings fresh tunes to the clubs and headphones. A journey to the core of hitechsoul and techno - dubby stuff for the floors, listening pearls as mindkiller. Stefanik's new long-player largely sticks to the kind of cosmic, Detroit-fed product he brought to market on those records. "Largely" because Stefanik wanders from that path quite a bit, forgoing homogeneity to include tracks orbiting on axes rather distant from the lean, brooding techno at the album's gravitational center. 2009, !K7. No Hassle is the fifth full-length released by the duo, who are comprised of Richard Dorfmeister (of legendary trip-hoppers Kruder & Dorfmeister) and Austrian musician Rupert Huber. Whereas much of their previous material had Dorfmeister's dubby basslines up front, this album was developed as a more ambient project, combining submerged samples and live instrumentation to create a lush and immersive hour of music. "It's our personal reaction to everything," explains Richard. "To all things that are pressuring you from outside, or internally, from every angle. It's sort of the ideal position to achieve, and it's the same idea behind the music: to achieve an hour where you feel hassle free." Electronica, Downtempo

2009, Schole. Nocturnal, in much the same vein as his debut, Windvane and Window, is a collection of sparsely-titled snippets of IDM melancholia courtesy of Euseng Seto which promises to warm cockles and melt hearts no matter how low the temperatures outside might be sinking. Fortunately, gone are the wispy and forgettable voices that pervaded his first record and acted as the sole obstacles to its excellence. In their place stand beats of even more delectable glitchiness than ever before and layers of immensely tasteful sampling and keyboard playing, as would perhaps be expected of one for whom both Akira Kosemura and Haruka Nakamura have previously provided remixes. 2009, Mush. Seamlessly amalgamating nature and electronics, Vignetting The Compost, the third full-length release from Bibio, channels instruments and vocals from a bygone era through a futuristic digital portal. History may credit Edison with the phonograph but, in truth, the first such device mysteriously washed up on the shores of England in 1876... playing Bibio. Vignetting The Compost is at once timeless and innovative; 60s-esque folk guitar and mechanic manipulations of sounds whose instruments of origin are less important than the feelings they evoke, layer upon each other with ease and intricacy. The essence of Analog Africa is clear; searching in dusty warehouses for forgotten music to keep the sound alive.

2009, Ninja Tune. Thanks to all-conquering Australian stadium dance outfit Pendulum, the spheres of drum 'n' bass and rock 'n' roll have never been closer. This is good news for The Qemists, three UK musicians lured away from their initial callings of guitar, bass and drums by the jump-up appeal of party drum 'n' bass. And while it might not be quite such good news for d 'n' b purists, who are probably getting a little tired of seeing the complexities of their beloved genre steamrollered into headbang-friendly rave rock that's every bit as subtle as a fretboard in the face, it's hard to deny Join The Q achieves a pretty impressive, rollercoaster-like momentum. electrified Drum'n'bass

2009, Kranky. Mark Nelson continues his exploration of minimalism through dub-tinged drones on his latest full-length under the Pan American alias. In a dozen years, the basic formula for a Pan American release has not changed dramatically. The biggest alteration in Nelson's latest work comes from a greater emphasis on organic sounds, perhaps due to songwriting assistance and drum and vibraphone work from Steven Hess. Guitars take center stage over dub or glitch elements, which in the past might've made their presence better felt. Electronica, Ambiental, Glitch, Experimental.

2009, Ad Noiseam, EP. Brains behind the project, is first of all the two artists Gideon Kiers (a.k.a. Telcosystems + curator of the Sonic Acts Festival) and Jason Köhnen, the latter also known for his hyperactive breakcore-project Bong-Ra. To simply dismiss this is another Ninja Tune wannabe record that simply aims to rescore Wong Kar-Wai films with more interesting beats is to do it a great disservice. Weaving between dark ambient jazz, electronica and back again, KDE is an album that needs to be listened to as a whole - this is a 69 minute journey through a musical narrative. Not perhaps what you would expect from label such as Planet Mu, more commonly associated with the industrial drum n bass of owner μ-ziq but very welcome none the less. 2008, Ghostly International. Under Seattle's largely grey skies, the musician behind the Sight Below challenges the conventions of ambient techno with his guitar. E-bowed, slide, and lightly picked guitars through a series of loopers, 12-bit reverb boxes, and delay units, kneading and distending the notes until they drone like bees in a tunnel or keen like an orchestra of singing saws. The resulting swirl is pinned to propulsive, achingly subtle percussion, which guides the listener through the gloom towards the music's hopeful center. The resulting ambient works seem as effortless as natural phenomena; in fact, they're carefully played, head-nodding hymns to the artist's solitary life. Techno, Ambiental, Dub Techno.

2008, Ninja Tune. Alfred "Daedelus" Darlington is a proponent of Edwardian dandyism for the Internet age, and his electronic whimsy has been influenced equally by Coldcut's chopped-up beats and Bernard Herrmann's orchestral Vertigo. But on Love to Make Music To, the L.A. producer unveils a nocturnal soundtrack toughened up by booty bass, hardcore techno, and coked-out club rap. Daedelus' furious stylistic shifts are engrossing (if challenging), and when he closes the album with the glowing predawn ballad "You're the One" it sounds like hard-won catharsis. vineri seara in martin, pisicile cu accent de south east london s-au catarat pe platforma dinauntru si au inceput sa cante cu ce au avut la indemana. si cand spun asta chiar i mean it, caci, hai sa recunoastem, fiecare purtam cu noi in fiecare moment o jucarie zornaitoare cu care am putea tine isonul unei melodii sau un hand-puppet numit puss-puss care, desigur, ar da o voce buna de ajutor la refren. da, herghelia de feline psappista traieste in lumea ei frumos ordonata unde versuri melancolic-sentimentale cad pe clape de casio si te baga-n priza, yo. cei doi felinari sefi, galia si carim, au "miorlait" melodii caramelizate de pe toate cele 3 albume din desaga si in pauze au aruncat cu remarci brit-amuzante si acadele in public (daca cineva are cucui, of course, blame it on london). ii mai asteptam pe la noi, poate se implica financiar la sponsorizare si whiskas, sper eu. normal, dupa ce pisicile au plecat acasa, soarecii din martin au dansat pe mese pe beat-urile taticului jon more pe care il respect si pe aceasta cale pentru colaborarile cu the fall.

nu, coelho, nu e pentru tine. in documentarul vizionabil in mai multe felii de tort pe youtube avem de-a face cu generatia old-school de dementi/inovatori/exploratori audio ai bbc-ului. pasionatii de doctor who stiu despre ce vorbesc.

bonus audio:
ceva fascinant despre station numbers, de pe radio bbc, transmisiile de coduri bizare care mai continua si astazi.
danger, danger, high fontage!

Giuseppe Ielasi - Aix

2009, 12k. Italian electronic composer Giuseppe Ielasi themed this album around the idea of rhythmic grids, something illustrated in a helpfully literal fashion by its artwork: the colorful, closely knit and highly organized construction provides a visual signifier for the sort of musical developments captured on the disc. Seldom do you hear an artist on the 12k roster working so explicitly and so pointedly with rhythm, but Ielasi does something quite remarkable with Aix: he's used all the tricks in his microsound arsenal to fashion warm, strangely jazzy 4/4 music from delicate concrete sound sources. The narrative unfolds according to Ielasi's largely improvisational sequencing skills, stacking up a wealth of location-based acoustic events - forming beat patterns from the strangest of sampled noises. Ambiental, Electronica, Experimental, Clicks.
