| "Love Comes Close, the official Cold Cave debut album (it's just been signed to Matador, where it will be re-released in November) is amazing. It's amazing because everything I expected it to be - a sheet white trip through a ghost house of electrical circuits and grubby mirrors - it isn't. But mostly it's just amazing because it's one of the best pop albums of the year. Sure, 'Life Magazine' starts off sounding like the ghost of Depeche Mode rising from a drowning pool of static, but the female vocals are straight out of Heaven, and the ear-worm burrowing chorus is something else. In the early 90s, industrial legends Swans turned their hands to pop music and made some of the best records of all time. Cold Cave's done the same and made one of the best of the year." (FACT) |

The well-practiced UK duo of Andrew Hargreaves and Craig Tattersall never rest on their illustrious laurels, or misinterpret tradition deliver a surprise in the form of ‘Words Are Something Else’. Taking their influence from myriad places has always been a subtle hint toward the Boats current psyche, and using the words deep, and techno, while alluding to their new album is a new, if not slightly fashionable (and disconcerting to tradition) statement. All their albums have leaning toward classic genres, and melodies, and yet here they pull the same thing off in a genre they’ve never been identified with, to a tee. | 2009, Touch. As half of the venerable Pan Sonic, Mika Vainio crafts bold soundscapes with uncompromising vision. On his Touch label releases, Vainio appears to strike out in fearless departures from the familiar, and he does so to our benefit. Isolating sine waves and oscillating drones in sparse dissemination, he displaces the listener and challenges one with his tactile impressions. Spatially, Black Telephone Matter is akin to AMM, digitally reminiscent of Keith Fullerton Whitman, and sensually familiar to Christian Fennesz. | 2009, Must Finish. Rjyan Kidwell has been releasing records and performing as Cex in and around Baltimore for roughly a decade now. As closely associated with the IDM scene as he’s always been, though, there’s long been a thread of appreciation for less ‘intelligent’ dance music running through Cex’s catalog. And his latest release, Bataille Royale, is his most overt attempt at incorporating the sounds of some of those other genres, particular Baltimore club music, into his own murky, proggy aesthetic. As a whole, the album spreads a handful of such epiphanies over a long, spacious sonic expanse. But even without listening closely for such moments, or to decode its subtle tapestry of influence and homage, Bataille Royale should clearly stand out as one of Cex’s best and most fully realized albums to date. dupa o pauza prea mare chiar si pentru publicitate, "Concursurile Chestionabil se intoarce" se intoarce la fix acum, de aniversarea pasirii lui armstrong pe luna, cu ocazia aselenizarii rockerilor melodramatici de la editors la teatrul de vara herastrau, pe 16 august, o initiativa one event de 5 stele in q magazine. si cum toti suntem curiosi sa ascultam live al treilea album in premiera, va ademenim cu 3 invitatii la acest gig highly recommended. drept urmare, dam startul unui concurs foto in care va invitam ca, inspirati de una dintre cele mai cunoscute&magistrale piese ale lor, cea atasata, sa ne trimiteti o fotografie cum vreti voi, mai arty sau mai funny, mai lo-mo sau mai dslr, starring voi fumand in fata unui spital. dupa criteriile noastre estetice chestionabile, vom alege top 3-ul care va primi free entry-ul binemeritat. poze la iulian.fecioru@gmail.com, pana pe 14 august, ora 18.

| 2009, Lantern. You can add the name Martin Schulte to a huge and ever-growing pulsating band of ambient-dub-techno exponents - one that may or may not rule from the centre of the Ultraworld, but certainly has acquired new powers. The embers of this smouldering sub-genre have been rekindled by new dub-smoke and tech-flames breaking out from Berlin (Quantec, Shoreless) to Bristol (Tectonic), Manchester (Modern Love) to Montreal (Atheus), London (Various) to uh... Kazan. Yup, that's Russia, for the geographically challenged, and that where Martin Schulte comes in: "The tracks represent my soul and is like a sound gallery of paintings." So says our Martin - known to passport controllers and his Mum as Marat Shibaev, evidently an earnest young man with a desire to get some Deep Inner out of his system and into ours. "This is my fifth solo release as Es. Kesamaan lapset was recorded during a three year period. It is a mix of soundscapes and pop tunes. You can hear influences varying from contemporary indie to ancient classical music. It's a summer album and a childhood photo album. The name translates as "The Children Of The Summerland". I've used lots of instruments, from high-end analogue synthesizers and upright pianos to cheap flea market Casios. I hope you enjoy the album. It is not as ambitious a work as my previous double album Sateenkaarisuudelma. But this one is meant to be listened to in many more situations and it might just fit as music for a house party too."
